Modular ESP protectors keep reservoir fluid from entering the oil-filled submersible motor, equalize pressure between the motor and the wellbore, carry the thrust load of the pump, regulate motor oil volume during ESP operation, and transmit torque from the electric motor to the pump

The modular ESP protector is installed between the motor and the intake in an electrical submersible pumping (ESP) system. The size and type of protector is determined based on submersible motor power, size, and design along with downhole conditions like angle of deviation, reservoir temperature, and the presence of solids. Typically, the more powerful the motor and the more aggressive the downhole conditions, the more protection you need to ensure ESP runlife.
The protector is a vital link in the ESP assembly and can extend overall system runlife when properly selected. We offer highly efficient protectors that perform across a wide range of operating conditions, giving you the flexibility to choose a protector that doesn’t compromise additional seals and eliminates unnecessary duplicate parts.
The protector consists of a head, base, shaft, seal chamber (either labyrinth or bag type), and seal body. With the repositioning of a few valves and plugs, the protector assembly can easily be configured into dozens of final designs. Labyrinth module protectors are typically used in wells with deviations less than 60° while bag-type configurations can be used in highly deviated and horizontal wells.
Bag and labyrinth chambers can be connected in series or in parallel:
