The high-gas open-stage ESP system uses an open impeller design (with no upper or lower disk) to produce low-flow, gassy wells. The open-stage ESP is lighter and smaller than other electrical submersible pumping (ESP) systems, provides better gas handling capabilities, and helps mitigate scale deposition.
Gas locking and pump seizure in ESPs occur when gas fills flow channels and effectively blocks fluid from passing through the system. The high-gas open-stage ESP omits the upper and lower disks from the impellers, eliminating the cavities in which gas can get trapped. So gas is dispersed into the reservoir fluid along with any existing solids to create a homogenized gas-fluid-solid mix that can pass through the pump.
Compared to common submersible pumps, the open-stage ESP is lighter and shorter, improves gas handling capabilities, and reduces scaling. It is ideal for use in low-flow, sandy, high-gas wells with variable flow rates.
With consistent performance at low flow rates, the open-stage ESP is a good candidate for replacing many rod-lift pumps, which are notorious for wearing through tubing and require regular workovers and maintenance operations.
